Karen Butterfield, Ed. D.
Karen Butterfield is currently with WestEd. She was previously an Educator in Residence for the Chief Council of State School Officers (CCSSO) as a member of its Educator Workforce team. She provides technical assistance and support to state education agencies (SEAs) tied to teacher and principal effectiveness policy implementation.
Karen’s background includes having served as associate superintendent of both the Academic Achievement Highly Effective Teachers and Leaders divisions at the Arizona Department of Education for ten years. She was responsible for the development and implementation of the state’s optional teacher/principal evaluation system, as well as oversight of certification, educator preparation approval, Title IIA, high school renewal, dropout prevention, professional learning and the AZ Charter Schools Program.
Flagstaff Arts & Leadership Academy (FALA), a charter high school focusing on the arts, academics and leadership, was founded by Karen in 1996, and became a state and national charter school model by the Arizona Department of Education and U.S. Department of Education, while serving as its executive director. She was a teacher and administrator for the Flagstaff Unified School District for 22 years prior to developing FALA, and was named Arizona Teacher of the Year in 1993.
